McCoist harbours ambitions to be Rangers manager one day

Ally McCoist still wants to manage Rangers but is concerned the job will be made increasingly difficult by the club's dire financial situation.

"I have ambitions to be a manager - of course I have," said McCoist. "I'm a glass half-full kind of guy."

But, when asked if he was worried that he would inherit a scaled down operation, the assistant manager said: "It is a distinct possibility.

"As a supporter, you would not want to see the club's assets being stripped."

McCoist, like manager Walter Smith, is currently working without a contract as the club seek new owners.

The Ibrox outfit are about £30m in debt and no permanent signings have been made since the summer of 2008.

Pedro Mendes was sold in January, while new contracts for Kris Boyd, Kirk Broadfoot and Nacho Novo have yet to be agreed.

However, Rangers enjoy a 10-point lead in the championship race and are in the final of the Co-operative Insurance final and McCoist is focusing on that success rather than the club's ailing bank balance.

"If you let it get to you, then it would matter, but you can't let it," he explained.

"You have to come in and do your work, plan and prepare for the games, and look at the players. You owe it to the players and, of course, the support to stay focused and get the team ready.

"That's not difficult. The other side of it is something we could do without, but we've all got a job to do, which we love."

McCoist is expected to take over when former Scotland and Everton boss Smith quits but he does not believe the manager's departure date will be based on whether or not Rangers retain the SPL title this season.

"I think it will depend how he feels more than anything," he said.

"He has never given me any indication at all. I don't expect to hear any sooner or any later.

"He has made his own decisions throughout his managerial career and he will continue to do the same. I don't think anybody could deny that he's doing a good job."
