Sporting Lisbon defender Tonel would welcome a January transfer to Rangers, according to his agent.
Miguel Saavedra told BBC Sport that the Ibrox club have shown recent interest in the 28-year-old and he expects to hear more from Rangers next week.
"My player is very interested in this move and is hoping a deal can be agreed," said Saavedra.
"We just have to wait now to hear back from Rangers. They know what it will take to get the player."
Italian giants Roma and Lazio, and Greek side Panathinaikos have been linked with the 3m-rated defender, who has twice faced Rangers in the Uefa Cup.
Rangers beat Sporting on their way to last season's final, while Tonel was in the Maritimo side that lost out on penalties at Ibrox in 2004.
