Rangers drawn into SFA youth row

SFA president George Peat
Peat has been criticised for axing clubs from elite youth football

Ross County have called for consistency with some SPL clubs having fallen foul of rules that saw three SFL clubs axed from youth football's top tier.

Rangers have written to their scouts to ask them to renew their forms relating to child protection.

It is understood that one scout has not renewed his disclosure form for four years, meaning the club would not meet the Scottish FA's three-year rule.

County chairman Roy McGregor has demanded talks with the SFA.

Rangers passed an SFA inspection in November and the clubs comply with the law over child protection laws.

But County and First Division rivals Dunfermline Athletic and Dundee have all been thrown out of the elite league after failing to meet SFA rules over staff disclosure forms.

And all three claim they have been wrongly excluded from the league.

McGregor, who plans to raise the matter with Scotland's first minister on Monday, and Dunfermline chairman John Yorkston have called for George Peat to consider his position as SFA chairman.

McGregor told BBC Sport: "All we want to do is get round the table and actually address this, but he seems to be avoiding that.

"For a man that is supposed to be the custodian of football at all levels in this league, he seems to be at variance with his clubs and I would suggest he's probably at variance with his chief executive, which augurs deeper questions."

McGregor claimed that SFA chief executive Gordon Smith had been supportive of the three clubs in their battle against the governing body's decision.

And Dundee chief executive Dave MacKinnon believes that an intervention by Smith would go a long way to resolving the issue.

"Gordon is a football man and he really knows what the consequences of this will be if it's not sorted," said MacKinnon on Radio Scotland's Sportsound programme.

"I've given him an opportunity as chief executive to call an appeals committee and, if he does that, he'll be held in the highest esteem because then he can do his job and get it sorted."
