Smith rues late lapse for Rangers
Rangers manager Walter Smith
Smith said the Lyon decider at Ibrox would be special
Rangers manager Walter Smith said he was disappointed with the goals his side conceded in the 3-2 Champions League defeat by Stuttgart.

The loss in Germany means Rangers need a point against Lyon at Ibrox on 12 December to progress to the knock-out stages of the competition.

"Lyon was always going to be an important game," Smith told BBC Sport.

"We have a big night to look forward to at Ibrox and if we show the same endeavour I'll be pleased."

Smith expressed disappointment at the manner of Stuttgart's equaliser when Cacau scored with a back heel on the stroke of half-time.

"We're disappointed to lose the game and I felt we lost a bad goal just before half-time," he said.

"It gave a little bit of the impetus to Stuttgart, who started the second half strongly.

"Stuttgart got themselves in front, but credit to our boys who came back and managed to equalise.

"A point didn't matter to us in the game. That's why the disappointing factor of pushing people forward is conceding a goal just after we did that.

"In the end, the draw wouldn't have made any difference to us anyway."

DaMarcus Beasley was substituted early in the second half with a suspected knee ligament injury.

Smith said he may be out for some time, but added that Lee McCulloch, who was also withdrawn through injury, only suffered a slight knock.
