Hutton says Rangers can qualify
The impressive Hutton won a penalty for Rangers when he was crudely upended by Fernando Meira.
The impressive Hutton won the winning penalty for Rangers
Alan Hutton insists Rangers can qualify for the knock-out phase of the Champions League after he inspired the Ibrox side to a 2-1 win over Stuttgart.

Rangers have been given little hope of progressing after being drawn in a group which includes Barcelona and Lyon, as well as the German champions.

"We've been written off since day one so there's no pressure on us," he said.

"We can just go out and play football and hopefully it will be enough to go through.

"We have got off to the best possible start by getting three points on the board and we can only go forward, build on this and hopefully get more points," continued Hutton.

Rangers defender Alan Hutton

"We have a lot of tough games coming up so it was important to get a good start tonight."

And Hutton insisted the best is yet to come from him after he produced one of his best performances for Rangers in the thrilling win over Stuttgart.

The 22-year-old full-back played a pivotal role in the defeat of the Bundesliga winners.

"I've had a couple of good performances and that has to be up there," he said. "It's one of my best.

"I'm just looking to grow this season, do the best that I can and hopefully get even better.

Hutton produced a superb surging run which took him past four Stuttgart players before setting up Charlie Adam for Rangers equaliser after Mario Gomez had fired the visitors ahead.

He was then upended in the box to win a 75th minute penalty which was converted by Jean-Claude Darcheville to give the Ibrox side a priceless opening victory in Group E.

Hutton has flourished under the guidance of boss Walter Smith and is confident last night's impressive outing will be the first of many over the course of the season.

MY SPORT: DEBATE

"I have self-belief and the manager has belief in me as well and that makes it all the better," said Hutton.

"It was brilliant to see those goals go in- it's great to be part of the team and it's even more special to be involved in both goals.

"I'm happy with my performance and even happier with the performance of the team."
