Smith not accepting Euro excuse
Rangers manager Walter Smith
Walter Smith was disappointed with Rangers' first half
Rangers manager Walter Smith says a midweek Champions League tie was no excuse for a flat performance against Gretna on Saturday.

"If that is the situation, it is one we have to rectify," he told BBC Sport after the 4-0 victory at Ibrox.

"We will face a number of league fixtures after what are going to be punishing Champions League games.

"We would certainly be looking for a better performance than we had in the first half against Gretna."

But Smith was content that his side had continued their winning run this season.

"It was a good result and, in that sense, we have got the job done," he said.

"We were fortunate to be a goal ahead at half time, but in the second half we were better and played in a more controlled manner.

"I don't think anybody could say we did not deserve to win."

He poined out that Jean-Claude Darcheville was still nursing an Achilles injury and that fellow new signing Daniel Cousin was not yet match fit.

"We've not lost a league game and come through four matches in the Champions League while we have a fair number of players being integrated into the team," added a fairly satisfied Smith.
