Walter Smith says more signings are needed at Ibrox

A 2-0 defeat away to Aberdeen was Rangers' second in a row.

"We had a good reaction from the players when we took over and rid ourselves of inconsistency for about a dozen games or so," said Smith.

"But, once we won the Champions League spot, we've not been good enough to drop down and keep it going."

Smith has already signed Bordeaux striker Claude Darcheville, Falkirk forward Alan Gow and St Mirren defender Kirk Broadfoot.

"We need a few more players and hopefully we can get them in and look forward to next season," said Smith.

Aberdeen had needed a victory to secure third place and Uefa Cup qualification.

"Aberdeen had an extra edge to their play in the first half of the game especially and, in the second half, we had a fair bit of possession, but we never made it count in any way," added Smith.

"The period of time when Aberdeen had their best spell, they scored the goals that won the game and I don't think there was a great deal of complaint about that.

"We never really threatened their goal a great deal and if you don't do better in the last third of the pitch when you have a lot of possession of the ball then you are not going to win any games."
