Goram was a fans favourite in a successful Rangers career |
Former Scotland and Rangers goalkeeper Andy Goram says there are no excuses any more for sectarian singing. And he warned that the Ibrox club will suffer the consequences, with fans possibly banned from travelling, if Uefa rules are broken again.
Goram told BBC Scotland: "If we don't stop them (the fans) then we're going to get punished big time.
"We all know the rules so we've just got to abide by them - it's simple, it's just got to stop."
Uefa are preparing to launch an investigation into what some away fans were chanting after the Ibrox club's recent Uefa Cup tie in Pamplona.
Uefa's Control and Disciplinary Body imposed a fine on Rangers following "improper conduct" of some of their supporters, notably the smashing of a window of the Villarreal team bus at the second-leg of their Champions League match in Spain last March.
Despite an in-depth investigation, Rangers fans were found not guilty of alleged "discriminatory chants" at both legs of the tie, which Villarreal won on the away-goals rule after the two sides had finished 3-3 on aggregate.
However, Uefa's disciplinary inspector Gerhard Kapl challenged the decision and Rangers were subsequently "serverly warned" about their responsibility for any future misconduct of their fans.
 | Every club, Celtic and Rangers, knows the rules about singing so there's no excuse now |
Goram said that both Rangers and Celtic cannot afford for Uefa to impose further sanctions on them.
He said: "Every club, Celtic and Rangers, knows the rules about singing so there's no excuse now.
"I don't know what's going to happen now, whether they (the fans) are going to get banned from away games.
"It would be a big loss to fans who don't do that (sing sectarian songs).
"I don't know about getting thrown out of a tournament - I think that would be a bit harsh and teams as big as Celtic and Rangers can't afford for that to happen."
Meanwhile, Goram is tipping the current Scotland keeper, Craig Gordon, to become an all-time Scotland great.
Goram, who was nicknamed 'The Goalie', during his long, successful career at Ibrox said: "He (Gordon) doesn't make mistakes and that's the secret.
"He's not been playing that long but it's as if he's been playing for years and years already.
"He's calm, he looks the part and that's the big thing I like about him - he's got composure."
And Goram feels the Hearts skipper could easily play in the Premiership and is urging the 24-year-old to move to a bigger club in order to fufil his potential.
"He's got the lot and now if he can go on to play in the Premiership in England then he can take that extra step up," Goram said.
"I think then that will probably make him one of Scotland's greats.
"The next test is to go to a club that's regular Champions League and test himself that way.
"It would certainly suit him down in England and I don't see any reason why Craig couldn't go down there and more than hold his own - he's got all the credentials."
