Le Guen is widely expected to succeed Alex McLeish

Le Guen is expected to be named as Alex McLeish's successor next week, and Wenger says his fellow Frenchman is a "good catch" for the Ibrox club.

"I know Paul well and he came here (to Arsenal) for a while," said Wenger.

"He is intelligent and has a good sense for the game. He likes to play and is a good analyser of the modern game."

The new manager at Rangers is likely to be given significantly more in the way of transfer funds than McLeish was allowed, but the outgoing manager says he is not bitter.

"I came at a time when the club were down-sizing," he said.

"Other managers would have demanded big money and it just wasn't there.

"It was an opportunity for me, I've no regrets whatsoever and I'm leaving the club in a good financial position.

"I'm proud to have been part of the down-sizing while bringing success along the way. I was the unfashionable choice but effective."

McLeish's final season has been disappointing in a domestic sense, a fact the manager attributes partly to the club's involvement in the Champions League.

"We've got to strive to build a squad to withstand every challenge. That has got to be the goal for a club like Rangers," he added.

"If we hadn't done as well in Europe, I have no doubts that we would be further up the league.

"We would certainly be closer to Celtic, if not above them, and still involved in the cup."
