Marvin Andrews refused to have knee surgery |
Trinidad and Tobago coach Leo Beenhakker has promised Rangers he will not put Marvin Andrews at risk. The 29-year-old central defender played on at the end of the season after refusing to undergo an operation for a cruciate ligament knee injury.
Now he is wanted by Beenhakker to play in the Gold Cup in the USA.
But the national coach said: "We know exactly what we have to do with him and how we have to take care of him. I will do that, no problem at all."
Rangers had insisted that Andrews underwent surgery, but the player, who is a devout Christian, refused and relied on faith healing to get back into the team.
He went on to help them win the Scottish championship.
But manager Alex McLeish is concerned that a lack of a full summer break could endanger the former Livingston defender's career further.
Beenhakker, though, regards the Gold Cup as vital preparation for make-or-break World Cup qualifiers.
"I have experience of 40 years, so I'm not stupid," said the coach.
"I know I have to work in two groups - the guys still in competition and the ones who had a rest."
