Stewart's hopes of a move to Rangers are over |
Rangers have ended their interest in Scotland international Michael Stewart. The 23-year-old midfielder had been ready to accept a pay-off from Manchester United in order to complete a dream move to Ibrox.
But his future is now uncertain following the decision of Rangers to send him back to Old Trafford.
"He has performed well over the week and technically he is a very good player, but he is too similar to what we have," said Gers boss Alex McLeish.
Stewart spent much of last season on loan at Nottingham Forest but returned earlier than planned after falling out with new Forest boss Joe Kinnear.
He had been at Ibrox for several weeks but was not allowed to play as a trialist while still contracted to United.
McLeish said he would recommend Stewart to other managers but added he was just not the player Rangers were looking for.
"He integrated really well with the squad and we believe he could enhance a squad elsewhere given his calibre as an individual and a player," said McLeish.
