Veteran trio extend Queens stay

Queen of the South captain Jim Thomson
Thomson helped Queen of the South to the Scottish Cup final

Andy Aitken has joined fellow defenders Jim Thomson and Jamie McQuilken in extending his contract as seven other players left Queen of the South.

The 30-year-old Aitken has put pen to paper on a one-year deal along with 33-year-old McQuilken and 37-year-old captain Thomson.

All three helped Queens reach this season's Scottish Cup final.

Thomson is entering his testimonial year, but fellow veteran John O'Neill has left the First Division outfit.

The former St Mirren midfielder, who was Queens' only part-time player, has been linked with a coaching role with relegated Stirling Albion.

Defender Eric Paton had already signed a pre-contract agreement to join Dundee.

Queens have released midfielder Brian Gilmour, defender Jim Lauchlan and striker Robert Campbell.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Jamie MacDonald has returned to Hearts at the end of his loan spell, while striker John Stewart is back at Falkirk.
