Preston midfielder Kevin Nicholls could be sidelined for up to six weeks after suffering a knee injury in Monday's reserve game against Tranmere.
An MRI scan revealed the former captain has suffered cartilage damage.
North End boss Alan Irvine told the club's website: "My first thoughts were that is was a bad one.
"Kevin will see a consultant next Tuesday and, if he agrees with our diagnosis, then Kevin will have an operation", added Irvine.
The former Leeds player has made 18 league and two Cup appearances for Preston this term, with his last outing as sub in the 4-1 FA cup win at Derby.
