Mellor never established himself in the first team at Anfield

The injury-plagued 23-year-old has signed for an undisclosed fee and North End boss Paul Simpson is confident his new recruit will be a big success.

Simpson told the club's website: "Neil is a goalscorer and hopefully that will continue to be the case.

"He is a tremendous signing. He has had his injury problems but we are happy he is over those and it's just a case now of building up his fitness levels."
