Liam Chilvers has rejected a new deal from Colchester to join Championship rivals Preston on a free transfer. The highly-rated centre-half, 24, has signed a two-year deal at Deepdale with the option of a further two years.
He said: "I've been with Colchester for two years and had good times there. We got promoted and had good cup runs.
"But in the long run I feel this move will benefit my career. Preston have been challenging for promotion recently and I had to take this opportunity."
Former Arsenal trainee Chilvers is the second high-profile departure from the Us' playing staff this summer following Neil Danns' decision to join Birmingham.
