Striker Webber joins Portsmouth

Middlesbrough and Swansea were also keen on signing Webber

Portsmouth have signed striker Danny Webber on a two-year contract.

The 27-year-old, who was a free agent after being released by Sheffield United this summer, impressed during a trial at Fratton Park.

"I wanted to sign him when I was at Nottingham Forest but he went to Watford," Pompey boss Paul Hart told his club website.

"He is hungry with something to prove, plays off the shoulder of defenders and gives us another attacking option."

Hart added: "When I found out Danny was available I asked him to come down and train with us - and I was delighted with what I saw."

Portsmouth have lost all four of their Premier League games this season and are bottom of the table, having scored only one goal.

Webber began his career at Manchester United and has been training with the Old Trafford outfit since leaving the Blades.

He joined Watford in 2003 before moving to Sheffield United on loan in March 2005.

Webber signed for the Blades for £500,000 on a three-year contract in June 2005 and went on to score 23 goals in 114 league appearances for the Bramall Lane club.

However he was not given a new contract by manager Kevin Blackwell.
