Adams has no issue with call-ups

Tony Adams
Adams will be always happy to release players for friendlies

Portsmouth boss Tony Adams has entered the club versus country debate by insisting he is happy to release his players for friendly internationals.

The likes of Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger have questioned whether such midweek games are worthwhile.

Ex-England player Adams told BBC Radio Solent: "I'll never have a problem with players representing their countries.

"Even though I have got important games, it is a fantastic honour."

England boss Fabio Capello recently announced a strategy of making injured players report for duty if there is any doubt over their availability.

Adams feels that could lead to problems, saying: "It's a worrying period for clubs and international managers. It needs good dialogue and trust.

"I had to let Lassana Diarra get on a plane and report to France even though he'd just limped off in the first half of our game with West Ham. I was angry about that.

"On the other hand England physio Gary Lewin has been great with Glen Johnson, who has been carrying a niggle.

"There has been great communication and trust between us. I know he's in safe hands."
