Adams' Port Vale lost 3-1 at home to Northampton on Saturday

Port Vale manager Micky Adams says that his players still have a chance to impress him before he makes a decision on their futures.

Several of his first-team squad are out of contract at the end of the season.

"We've got 13 games to go and those discussions are a million miles away," Adams told BBC Radio Stoke after Saturday's 3-1 defeat by Northampton.

"They have an opportunity [to prove they are worth a contract] every time they cross that white line."

The former Leicester and Brighton manager continued: "Some let themselves down, I saw people not wanting the ball, particularly in the first half.

"People will say that it was the three players that I took off, but if I could have brought 10 off at half-time, I would have done."

Only four of the 11 players that started the game on Saturday - Adam Yates, Gareth Owen, Lee Collins and Doug Loft - have contracts with the club that stretch beyond the end of the campaign.

Vale are currently 13th in League Two, nine points away from the play-offs.

"This time last season, we were a team that were a team that were struggling at the wrong end of the table. Now we're a mid-table side," he said.

"If you ask me if I'm happy being a mid-table side, I'm not, and I don't want Port Vale to be a mid-table side because I think we're better than that."
