Former Peterborough United player Tommy Robson has backed goalkeeper Joe Lewis to be a future success for England.

The 20-year-old was called in to Fabio Capello's squad after Chris Kirkland returned to Wigan due to a back injury.

Robson, who made over 480 league appearances for Posh, told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "It's absolutely brilliant news, isn't it?

"The lad must have thought when he came here from a higher division he'd scuppered his chance, but it hasn't."

Lewis broke Peterborough's transfer record when he signed for 400,000 from Championship side Norwich.

The other lads have probably now let themselves down a little bit on training

In his first season at London Road he helped Posh to promotion to League One with a second-placed finish.

"It just shows the faith everybody at Peterborough had in him, the chairman's backing of the manager, and it shows how good a picker of players he is," Robson said.

Robson believes Lewis will have a great chance to impress with many of England's Premier League stars having only just finished their seasons.

"The other lads have probably now let themselves down a little bit on training and are mentally and physically [tired], so to pick him it's a great choice."

"The club's got promotion and in the same year one of their players has been selected for the England squad," he added. "That's great news for the season to come."
