Oldham Athletic have announced that midfielder Dale Stephens has signed a new three-year contract.

The 22-year-old came through the ranks at Bury and has had loan spells at Rochdale, Hyde and Droylsden.

He joined Oldham in the summer of 2008 from Bury but it was subject to a tribunal which ruled the Latics had to make payments to the Shakers.

Paul Dickov told the club website: "It's a great signing and a measure of Dale's commitment to the club."

He added: "I believe Dale will only get better and he has the ability to go all the way to the top. It was important to secure his services on a long term deal."

Stephens has so far thrived under Dickov, scoring two goals in the Latics opening two fixtures.

"I had my injury problems after I joined the club and needed a chance when I got when Jon Worthington was injured," Stephens said.

"There is a great buzz about the place. We are pulling together and that is why I wanted to sign and be part of it."
