Oldham have signed Republic of Ireland international defender John Thompson, who was released by Nottingham Forest. Dublin-born Thompson, 25, has signed a two-year deal to keep him at Boundary Park until 2009.
A graduate of Forest's academy, he made 148 appearances for the club after making his debut in 2002.
Latics boss John Sheridan beat off competition from several clubs for Thompson, who has three full international caps.
