Oldham Athletic's owners have put a block on all incoming transfers while they wait to see whether they will receive a fee for striker Chris Porter. Porter scored 22 goals for the Latics last season but is out of contract this summer and able to consider offers.
Oldham expected to receive a fee but a move to another country would enable Porter, 23, to move for nothing.
Managing director Simon Corney told the Oldham Chronicle: "We offered Chris a good contract and want him to stay."
Meanwhile Oldham and Chesterfield have held talks over a possible return to Oldham for midfielder Mark Allott, 29.
Oldham striker Matty Wolfenden, 19, has agreed a new two-year deal with the club.
