Qureshi denies Notts County claim

A former prime minister of Pakistan has denied being involved in the takeover of League Two Notts County.

County had claimed Dr Moeen Qureshi, who was Pakistan's head of government for three months in 1993, was one of the club's new investors.

But they now accept he is not and blame the error on a misunderstanding, report BBC Radio Nottingham.

The Shafi and Hyat families have been named as investors in the trust which owns Notts County.

County had remained tight-lipped on the identities of the people behind the purchase of the club but intense speculation, sparked by the high-profile departure of Sol Campbell, forced them to ask for permission to reveal the information.

"I can confirm that the families have a significant holding in Qadbak and are very pleased with the diversified range of assets we have invested in," said Anwar Shafi.

"But we are a private business and do not wish to comment any further."

The Football League had previously confirmed that they were looking into the purchase of the club.

Now County hope revealing the identities of trust members will convince the League to give them the green light.

"Despite giving the Football League every possible answer they have yet to publicly confirm their approval," the statement continued.

"We hope this statement will speed that process considerably."

Peter Trembling, who fronted the consortium of investors and took up the role of chief executive at Meadow Lane, insisted last Sunday that the Football League was not looking into the takeover of the Magpies.

"There is no investigation," he told BBC Radio 5 live's Sportsweek programme.

"We've completed the 'fit and proper persons test', which we have to do quite rightly for the directors of the football club.

"Of course they have asked more questions because it is unusual circumstances - a private overseas investment trust - and they want to know more about that."
