Mills had two spells as a player at Meadow Lane |
Notts County have named Coventry's first-team coach Gary Mills as their new manager. Coventry had allowed County to speak to Mills following the resignation of Billy Dearden on Wednesday.
Mills made more than 100 appearances as a player for Notts County during two spells at Meadow Lane from 1987-89 and from 1994-96.
But he faces a daunting task to turn around their fortunes as they currently lie second from bottom in Division Two.
"The board was delighted that Gary had applied for the role," County said on their website.
"They were impressed with his enthusiasm for fight for the survival of the club in Division Two, and look forward to working with him to secure the long-term future of the club."
Mills, who also had spells with Nottingham Forest and Leicester City, won the Anglo-Italian Cup with County in 1995 and was their player of the season in 1987-88.
He went on to manage Grantham Town, Kings Lynn and Tamworth before joining Coventry's coaching staff in July 2002.
"We're bitterly disappointed to lose not only a good coach, but also a good friend," Coventry caretaker-boss Eric Black told his club's website.
"Notts County has acquired an excellent, knowledgeable and ambitious professional, who I have no doubt will take the club forward."
