Northampton Town manager Stuart Gray is waiting to hear news on Adebayo Akinfenwa's fitness before deciding whether to offer him a new contract.
The striker, 25, who has scored six goals since joining the Cobblers in January, broke his leg just over a year ago and now has a steel rod in it.
Gray told BBC Radio Northampton: "We're just waiting on medical advice.
"We know that if he gets the steel rod out he'll be a lot freer and we can get him fitter."
The Cobblers are releasing Akinfenwa's strike partner and leading goalscorer Poul Hubertz.
And Gray admits that the club have to address the striker situation.
"Like any stage of the season, any football club is looking to strengthen strikers," he said.
"Up front we're going to have to bring new faces in and I think there are going to be a lot of strikers out of work."
