Smith had a clause in his contract that would have allowed him to speak to other clubs this summer following Town's failure to win promotion.

But the former Sunderland forward will report back for pre-season after under-going hernia surgery.

"I always want to know what the players are thinking and he has told us he wants to stay. That is good news," boss Colin Calderwood told their website.
