Chris Hughton's sacking as Newcastle boss marked the latest turn of the managerial merry-go-round at St James' Park. Here, BBC Sport looks at the eight managers that have had the role since 2004
Sir Bobby Robson leads Newcastle for five years, with a Premier League high of third, before he is forced out of the club in August 2004 following a disappointing start to the season. Win ratio: 46.66%
Graeme Souness leaves Blackburn for a turbulent 16 month spell, falling out with Craig Bellamy as well as acting peacemaker between Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer, who fight with each other during the loss to Aston Villa
Souness spends 47m on players, including 17m on Michael Owen, but finishes 14th in 2005 and is sacked in February 2006 after a defeat by Manchester City leaves Newcastle near the relegation zone. Win ratio: 43.37%
Glenn Roeder (right) is named caretaker boss and gets the job on a permanent basis in May 2006 after leading the Magpies to seventh, with Newcastle legend Alan Shearer appointed as sporting ambassador
Newcastle are awarded the 2006 Intertoto Cup, the first piece of silverware for 37 years, but Roeder is faced with a crippling injury list and he resigns in May 2007 after a home defeat by Blackburn. Win ratio: 45.2%
Sam Allardyce is next in the Newcastle hotseat, taking charge 16 days after leaving Bolton, and builds a squad including the likes of Alan Smith, Joey Barton, Geremi and Mark Viduka
But a combination of poor results, a change in ownership and fan dissatisfaction leave Allardyce increasingly isolated and his eight-month reign ends in January 2008 after a 0-0 FA Cup draw with Stoke. Win ratio: 33.33%
Harry Redknapp, Alan Shearer and Mark Hughes are all linked with the job but owner Mike Ashley makes the dramatic decision to give the hugely popular Kevin Keegan the manager's job for the second time
After guiding Newcastle to safety, Keegan grows disillusioned with the club's management structure and perceived board interference and he quits after eight months, sparking mass fan protests. Win ratio: 28.57%
The demonstrations lead to Ashley putting the club up for sale and amid the turmoil, former Wimbledon manager Joe Kinnear is appointed as the club's interim boss in September with the deal extended to the end of the season
Kinnear has run-ins with the press, Hull boss Phil Brown and Charles N'Zogbia but requires heart surgery in February 2009, leaving Chris Hughton in temporary charge with the club in a relegation battle. Win ratio: 19.23%
Hughton fails to stop the slide and Ashley turns to another Newcastle legend, Alan Shearer, who is given eight games to save the club from falling into the Championship
Shearer cannot work his magic from the dug-out and Newcastle's 16-year reign in the top flight comes to an end when they lose 1-0 to Aston Villa on the final day of the season. Win ratio: 12.5%
With Shearer departing St James' Park, it is up to Hughton to restore stability and he secures a return to the Premier League at the first attempt as Newcastle win the Championship by 11 points
Newcastle make an encouraging start to life back in the Premier League, beating Arsenal away, Aston Villa 6-0 and defending Premier League champions Chelsea in the League Cup
But since the victory over Arsenal last month, Newcastle have not won in five games and the club sacked the 51-year-old on 7 December, saying they wanted someone "with more managerial experience". Win ratio: 55.71%
On 9 December, Pardew is handed the mighty shirt and reveals some managers have called him mad for taking the job. He adds: "It's a daunting prospect but I couldn't it turn down." Will Pardew bring success to the fans?
