Terriers forced my hand - Hughton

Shola Ameobi
Ameobi came off the bench but was later brought off injured

Newcastle United caretaker boss Chris Hughton has revealed Huddersfield forced him to alter his side after their 4-3 League Cup win on Wednesday.

The Magpies brought Jose Gutierrez and Shola Ameobi off the bench with the game in the balance and Hughton revealed both players picked up knocks.

"It got to a stage where we found we had to use them if we wanted to win the game," he told BBC Newcastle.

"It's the price you have to pay when you have to play midweek games."

Hughton's initial outlook on the match was to blood some of the club's younger professionals, with first starts for forwards Kazenga LuaLua and Nile Ranger, as well as a rare outing for Tamas Kadar.

And the former Tottenham and Republic of Ireland player Hughton believes the players should see it as a valuable part of their development.

"It was a great experience for them, a fabulous game to play in, they won't forget it and they'll certainly learn from it," he said.

"We had to play Danny Simpson at right back and he did really well at centre-half, Tamas Kadar similar, he's a centre-half who can play at left-back.

"Until their goal, I thought they coped very well, but then they conceded two poor goals in that period and I think they'll put that down to experience and they'll be better for it."
