Veteran midfielder Nicky Butt will miss Newcastle's start to the Championship season after a partial dislocation of his thumb in a pre-season fixture.
The 34-year-old former Manchester United player needed an operation after damaging his hand in a 7-2 victory against Darlington last weekend.
Butt, who joined Newcastle in 2004 after 12 years at United, is expected to be sidelined for around four weeks.
Newcastle open their league campaign against West Brom on 8 August.
