Nigeria international Obafemi Martins is likely to return for Newcastle's Premier League match against West Bromwich Albion United on Saturday.
The striker has been out for eight weeks following hernia surgery.
Martins came through a testing training session on Thursday, along with Mark Viduka and Alan Smith, who have also been out with injury.
"Oba is the nearest to starting and there's a definite possibility that he may start," said manager Joe Kinnear.
"They all had a make-or-break training session where we pushed them really hard and thankfully they all came through okay."
Newcastle are just one point above the relegation zone and have gone nine games without victory.
