Magpies fans plan demonstrations

Newcastle fans
Many Newcastle fans want Ashley to quit the club

Angry Newcastle supporters are expected to demonstrate against club owner Mike Ashley when the Magpies face Hull City at St James' Park on Saturday.

Discontent among Magpies fans is rife following the recent departure of manager Kevin Keegan.

As many as five separate demonstrations may take place in Newcastle city centre before, during and after the match.

Northumbria Police say extra officers will be on duty and have urged fans to vent their frustration peacefully.

A spokesman said: "The safety of the public remains top of our agenda at all football games throughout the season.

"The forthcoming game on Saturday is no different. Policing levels will always be adjusted according to any intelligence about possible disorder.

"We are aware that there is the potential for protest on Saturday and we will facilitate lawful and peaceful protest."

One fans' group has called for supporters to congregate an hour before kick-off at the old Milburn reception area of the ground.

It has also been suggested that many fans will boycott the match as a way of registering their disgust.

Ashley, who bought the club in May last year, has been advised to reassess his personal security arrangements if he decides to attend Saturday's game.

Director of football Dennis Wise has also been heavily criticised by fans following the resignation of Keegan, who ended his second spell as Newcastle manager citing interference in transfer policy.

Coach Chris Hughton has been placed in charge for the visit of Hull and has appealed to supporters to get behind Newcastle's players.

"We appreciate things may be difficult for the fans at the moment," said Hughton.

"But one thing Newcastle supporters are renowned for is their support of the team."
