Bassong has been capped at France under-21 level

Newcastle United hope to complete the signing of FC Metz defender Sebastien Bassong after he agreed terms and completed a medical at St James' Park.

Bassong played in the 1-0 defeat at Doncaster on Saturday after a spell on trial and is in the squad for this weekend's Mallorca Summer Cup.

A graduate of the French Clairefontaine academy, Bassong has represented France at under-21 level.

The 22-year-old made 79 appearances for Ligue 2 side Metz, scoring once.
