Bernard did not make an impact at Rangers

The 26-year-old left-back was released by Rangers during the summer and has joined the Magpies on a free transfer.

The Frenchman had left Newcastle in January 2005 to join Southampton before signing for Rangers in last August.

Bernard struggled to make an impact in Scotland and signs for Newcastle, who failed in their reported bid to sign left-back Wayne Bridge from Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Leeds chief executive Shaun Harvey is unhappy with the deal, claiming that they had agreed a contract with the player.

"Terms were agreed with the player for him to join Leeds, subject only to him passing a medical," said Harvey.

"The player has since reneged on the agreement and joined Newcastle United.

"We are disappointed but if he did not want to play for Leeds it is better to find out now, as we are only interested in players who are fully committed to the club."
