Boumsong moved to Rangers from Auxerre |
German club Hamburg have admitted defeat in their bid to sign Newcastle central defender Jean-Alain Boumsong. Hamburg were interested in Boumsong, 26, after selling Belgian Daniel van Buyten to Bayern Munich and Dutchman Khalid Boulahrouz to Chelsea.
Hamburg sporting director Dietmar Beiersdorfer told television channel DSF: "Boumsong will not be signing."
Boumsong, who has also been linked with Marseille and Lens, joined Newcastle for 8.5m from Rangers in January 2005.
He had arrived at Ibrox from Auxerre on a free transfer in the summer of 2004 but made only 28 appearances for them before moving to Newcastle when he signed a five-and-a-half-year deal.
French defender Boumsong, who moved to Rangers from Auxerre, did not play for the Magpies in Saturday's Premiership opener against Wigan, which Newcastle won 2-1.
Hamburg's defence only conceded 30 goals in 34 Bundesliga games last season.
