Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd has denied reports that caretaker boss Glenn Roeder is on the brink of being given the managerial role permanently. The Magpies chief reacted to strong speculation that prompted bookmakers to suspend betting on Roeder, 50.
Shepherd told Newcastle's website: "I'm aware of the reports circulating but the club won't be making any comment.
"We haven't ruled anyone in or out - when we have something to say we will make an official announcement."
Roeder has found favour from fans and pundits since being appointed in a caretaker role following Graeme Souness' dismissal in February.
Newcastle were flirting with relegation when Roeder took the reins but he has turned their fortunes round to the point where they have a chance of a Uefa Cup place.
The club have won 10 of their 15 games under Roeder.
Roeder was recently given permission by the Premier League to continue in his role until the end of the season, despite lacking the necessary coaching qualifications.
