Whelan shrugs off Jewell rumours
Dave Whelan
Whelan doesn't expect Jewell to move to Newcastle
Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has played down speculation linking boss Paul Jewell with a move to Newcastle by saying they are not big enough for him.

Jewell has been linked with the vacant manager's post at St James' Park after Graeme Souness' exit on 2 February.

Whelan told the Daily Star: "I'll back Paul if he wants to go to a big club like Manchester United or Liverpool."

Meanwhile, Jewell told BBC Radio Five Live: "For me to leave Wigan it would have to be something very special."

Speaking from Barbados, Whelan denied he has held talks with his opposite number at the Magpies, Freddy Shepherd, and insisted that Jewell remains part of his long-term plans.

He added: "I am told Freddy is here in Barbados but I have no idea where he is staying and I have not spoken to him.

"If Freddy had any interest in Paul Jewell he would speak to me directly. He's that kind of man.

"Paul Jewell can stay as long as he wishes with me. I have told him 'name the length of your contract'."

Jewell himself has further quelled talk of a move by reaffirming his commitment to club.

His team are eighth in the Premiership and he said: "I wouldn't be linked with the Newcastle job if Wigan were 19th in the table.

"I'm very happy at Wigan. I have a wonderful bunch of players, a great staff and a good chairman.

"I might have left last season if we didn't go up but since we have been in the Premiership I have enjoyed every second at Wigan."
