Shearer began his Newcastle career in 1996 |
Newcastle captain Alan Shearer is hoping to raise more than 1m for charities from his testimonial game against Celtic on 11 May 2006. The 35-year-old, who broke Jackie Milburn's club scoring record of 200 goals this month, will be retiring from football at the end of the season.
"I have my final opportunity to say farewell to the fans," said Shearer.
"I hope by pledging the money from my game people less fortunate than myself will also benefit from my career."
One of the beneficiaries of Shearer's testimonial will be the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC), a charity the striker has supported in the past.
Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd paid tribute to the striker, who signed for the club in a 15m deal from Blackburn in 1996.
"Alan Shearer is a true professional and is the epitome of all that is good about this terrific game," said Shepherd.
"His loyalty, commitment and total dedication over the years has provided, and continues to provide, football supporters with superb entertainment."
Celtic chairman Brian Quinn added: Alan's goalscoring record at Newcastle and throughout his career at club level and for England is a phenomenal achievement.
"We are sure a number of our supporters will make their way to St James' Park to play their part in football history and pay tribute to a true footballing legend."
