Bayern Munich have confirmed that Newcastle are in talks with Ghana defender Samuel Kuffour's agent. The German giants are willing to sell the 28-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of the season, and are waiting for the Magpies to make a bid.
"I heard that Kuffour's agent is in discussions with Newcastle," Bayern commercial manager Uli Hoeness told the Bundesliga club's website on Monday.
"If these discussions are successful, Newcastle would then contact us."
Bayern coach Felix Magath added: "We will let just one of the centre-backs go, either Kuffour or Thomas Linke."
Kuffour's agent Fabio Parisi played down talk last week of a possible move to St James' Park.
"Newcastle is a great club and the Premiership is of interest to Sammy, just like the Primera Liga. But I am in constant contact with clubs all over Europe," he said.
Kuffour joined Bayern in 1993 and has won five league titles and the Champions League with the Bavarian club.
If he does move to England, he will become Magpies boss Graeme Souness' third defensive signing since the transfer window re-opened.
Chesea's Celestine Babayaro and Rangers' Jean-Alain Boumsong have already been brought in to bolster the Newcastle backline.
