Newcastle manager Graeme Souness has revealed he is interested in signing Chelsea defender Robert Huth. But he dismissed reports any deal involving the 20-year-old would hinge on a swap with Magpies midfielder Kieron Dyer going to Stamford Bridge.
"Since I've been here the chairman has made another phone call to Chelsea enquiring about Huth's availability," Souness told BBC Radio Five Live.
"But Kieron Dyer was not mentioned in that conversation."
Souness made it clear he had no intention of parting company with Dyer, who is out of action with a hamstring injury.
"The Dyer connection has come from somewhere in London," Souness added.
"And it certainly wasn't originated from anyone at this football club."
But Chelsea boss Jose Morinho ruled out any move for the England midfielder after Tuesday's victory over CSKA. Souness is keen to find a quality replacement for defender Jonathan Woodgate, who joined Real Madrid in the summer.
The Scot also admitted he is considering 20-year-old Nottingham Forest centre-half Michael Dawson.
"I went to watch Dawson play for Nottingham Forest against Watford," said Souness.
"I was just checking on him and I see him as one for the future."
Dawson is Forest's most-rated player although he has only just returned from a long-term groin injury. Huth has made three appearances for Germany this season but has struggled to break into Chelsea's first team.
The Berlin-born centre-half joined the club as a trainee but has only made one appearance for the club this term.
