Promising defender Steven Taylor has signed a three-year contract, which will keep him at Newcastle until 2008. The 18-year-old made his debut as a substitute in the second leg of the Magpies' Uefa Cup win over Real Mallorca on 25 March.
He earned his first start in the defeat at Bolton three days later.
The England Under-21 international signed his first professional contract with Newcastle last year after joining the club on a scholarship.
He spent a month on loan at Wycombe Wanderers earlier this season and has now been elevated to the first-team squad at St James' Park.
Manager Sir Bobby Robson may need to call on Taylor again this season after an injury to Jonathan Woodgate.
Andy O'Brien is facing a two-match Premiership ban and both he and Titus Bramble are on the brink of suspension in Europe.
