Butcher backs Souness
By Phil McNulty
Chief football writer

Terry Butcher has backed his former Rangers manager Graeme Souness to be a success after taking over at Newcastle.

Butcher believes Souness, who has quit Blackburn, is perfect for a club plagued by allegations of player power and dressing-room problems.

He told BBC Sport: "He doesn't suffer fools and if there is anyone with a bad attitude he will have them. He will tell them to get playing or get out.

"He can be nasty when needed and is one of the most aggressive winners I know."

Butcher was Souness' captain at Ibrox but even that did not spare the England legend the axe.

He said: "I fell out with him but these things happen. He left me out of a League Cup semi-final.

"I'm surprised he has left Blackburn but I am delighted for him.

"If any of those Newcastle kids think they can get away with anything they will get a nasty shock.

"He is no respecter of reputations if people aren't doing it for him. He will either sort them out or move them on.

"Graeme has got the strength of his own convictions and he will be going up there to win things.

"He will shake things up and I think it is a great choice after Sir Bobby Robson, who did a magnificent job."
