 | ROBSON'S VIEW |
Newcastle boss Sir Bobby Robson has warned his team they must improve on their European displays after scraping past Valerenga 4-2 on aggregate. "We can't give a performance like that in the first half in the next round against a quality side," said Robson after the Uefa Cup third round win.
"They might be too far ahead and we can't catch them.
"We've had a warning, and it's a warning which has come good because we've won it in the end."
Robson added: "I thought we learnt a lot last year playing in the Champions League, but you wouldn't have thought that on our first-half performance.
"You can't be semi-insipid like we were in the first half and get away with playing against a real class team.
"They gave us a hard match. We had to respect our opponents but we had a poor first half - they were better than we were.
"We had to improve dramatically, which we did. We changed our game a little bit and we got a better product."
