Robson wants the club mole rooted out |
Sir Bobby Robson is said to have threatened to quit Newcastle following Carl Cort's 2m move to Wolves. The Sunday Mirror newspaper claimed Robson was furious that a club insider labelled Cort 'The Invisible Man' after he started just 24 games in four years.
Robson, 71, demanded that chairman Freddy Shepherd launch an investigation to discover who made the remark.
"I feel so angry about the situation," said Robson. "I am livid about it. I'm going to see the chairman about it."
He added: "I will tell the chairman how unhappy I am about this affair and the wording that was used about Carl Cort.
"He should really investigate where these sort of statements come from. If it is a club insider those statements are unacceptable.
"When I see the chairman, I will tell him 'Find that club insider and sack him! If you don't, I am going!' That's how bad I feel about that story."
Cort is now trying to resurrect his career at Wolves |
Shepherd declined to comment publicly on Robson's outburst, but privately is believed to have made moves to pacify his manager.
Robson backed his decision to sell Cort despite Newcastle losing 5m on the player, who endured a torrid time with injuries on Tyneside since moving there in 2000.
"The way Carl Cort has been portrayed is shameful," continued Robson.
"I bought Carl and I will stand up for my judgement on him. That boy has gone from one horrendous injury to another - and they've all been genuine.
"Wolves are getting a very good player. Carl proved that when he first came here and did very well.
"We paid 7m for him and he has been here four years. Divide the four years into the 7m and that amount is written off each year - it's like car depreciation.
"If we bank 2m for him, we have made a profit."
