Craig Brown becomes permanent Motherwell manager

Interim boss Craig Brown and assistant Archie Knox have agreed to to become Motherwell's management team on a permanent basis.

Former Scotland coach Brown was put in temporary charge at Fir Park following the departure of Jim Gannon.

"Archie and I spoke with the chairman (John Boyle)," Brown told BBC Scotland.

"He confirmed that he would like us to stay, I think at least until the end of the season, maybe beyond. We're happy with that."

Brown and Boyle had previously indicated that they would wait until the close of the January transfer window before discussing the future of the management team.

"The likelihood is that we'll get things officially done but I think his word is his bond and he wants us to be there and we've said we'll be happy to continue," Brown said before Wednesday's match against Falkirk.

"At the moment we're not looking to have contracts signed but they will eventually appear. I could say later what the nature of the contract will be and the duration."

When asked if an 18-month deal was likely, Brown responded: "That's a distinct possibility indeed, but until the end of the season definitely and, more than likely, we'll continue if everything's going okay.

"We're determined to do our best for Motherwell and we're very pleased with the response that we've had from everyone at the football club; players and the staff. You couldn't ask for a more welcoming environment in which to work."

And Brown has a clear idea of what his side should be aiming for between now and the end of the season.

"Top six is a reasonably good achievement in this very competitive league," he said.

"The last thing that we can countenance in this group of players is complacency.

"They've won a couple of league games but that's all. There's a lot more league games to play against very good teams."

The 69-year-old had earlier in the week laughed off suggestions that he was too old to be back in management and insists he has the same hunger for the job.

"I never thought about coming back into football management. I had one or two opportunities," said the former Clyde and Preston boss.

"The allure of the dressing room was quite compelling.

"I started coaching at Motherwell at 1974 and then I started as a manager in 1977. So, I've had a lot of years in football management and you do miss the day-to-day banter and you do miss the dressing room.

"I like to go to a football match anywhere but it's even better when you've got a stake in it; when you're involved.

"I was involved in the media and that was good, but I'm very lucky and privileged that I was given the chance to put my ideas into effect in the dressing room and the technical area with Motherwell."
