Phil O'Donnell has had injury problems this season |
Motherwell midfielder Phil O'Donnell has been told to prove his fitness before the end of the season if he wants a new contract. The has 35-year-old, who has had an injury-plagued career, has made 70 appearances since joining the Scottish Premier League club in 2004.
But he has played just three times this term and has not featured since August.
And manager Maurice Malpas said: "Phil O'Donnell, for example, has to prove his fitness before we can decide."
Malpas said he would tackle talks with players out of contract in the summer once Saturday's game against Celtic is out of the way.
And he admits that he has hit a stalemate with midfielder Brian Kerr.
"Brian is one I have spoken to and he agrees that we have made him a good offer," Malpas told his club website.
"But he has to make the best decision for his family and I have to respect that.
"But there will come a time when I will draw a line in the sand and look for an answer to allow us to plan for next season.
"We need a bigger squad and I have taken the board through my plans.
"This season, we had a couple of spells with a lot of injuries and it was obvious our squad was too tight.
"Hopefully, we can have a bit more depth next season and put some pressure on the guys who are in the side."
