Middlesbrough manager Gordon Strachan has told midfielder Gary O'Neil he must bide his time in returning to first-team action after an knee injury.
O'Neil has been out since the pre-season trip to Bray Wanderers, and Strachan will wait for his full fitness before restoring him to the squad.
"He's not recovered as well as he could," Strachan told BBC Tees.
"He's desperate to get back playing but I'm not going to rush him, it's going to be a long season."
O'Neil is all set for a fourth season on Teesside following a £5m move from Portsmouth in August 2007.
