Folan joined Hull from Wigan in August 2007 for 1m
Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate believes striker Caleb Folan can offer the attacking option his side has lacked so far this season.
Forwards Marvin Emnes, Jeremie Aliadiere and Leroy Lita all offer pace for Boro, but Southgate feels Folan can offer a different route to goal.
"We felt the one thing we don't have is a physical presence," he told BBC Tees.
"He can run in behind defences as well, he's got a terrific work ethic and he has a point to prove. He's hungry."
Southgate has been busy in strengthening his squad during the loan window, bringing in Preston centre-back Sean St Ledger as well as Folan. They could make their debuts against West Brom on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Southgate has been delighted with his side's application since dropping out of the Premier League last May.
The Teessiders remain second in the Championship following Tuesday's 3-1 defeat of Sheffield Wednesday, and Newcastle's defeat by Blackpool on the Wednesday.
And the Boro boss admitted that as far as pre-season expectations and hopes were concerned, his side remain on track.
"Every game is a challenge, we have to earn the right to play, but we're pleased because we're now on target for what we set before the season in terms of goals scored per game and three away wins is big news for us," he added.
"Most pleasingly, going a goal down in a game like we did on Wednesday, and coming back to win it showed the belief in the side."
