Middlesbrough midfielder Josh Walker will be out for up to six weeks after tests showed torn lateral ligaments from Saturday's derby with Sunderland.
Walker, 19, made his full debut in the game after loan spells with Bournemouth and Aberdeen and manager Gareth Southgate is disappointed by the news.
"The injury is a real blow to him," Southgate told BBC Tees after the game.
"He went over on his ankle and he was naturally upset when he had to come off because he had taken his chance well."
The Newcastle-born teenager has captained England at under-16, under-17, under-18 and represented the side at under-19 level.
