In preparation for the forthcoming Premier League season Gareth Southgate takes his side to Portugal to play in the Algarve Cup against Celtic and Vitoria Guimares.
Nestled around their trip to Faro will be visits to York City, Carlisle United, SPL side Hibernian and neighbours Darlington.
But who will be the men to watch?
BBC Sport tips the players to look out for from each of the clubs in action.
AIDEN MCGEADY - CELTIC
McGeady won a host of personal awards last season
Scottish domestic football has been given a shot in the arm by the development of a series of impressive young talents over the last few years, with players such as Rangers keeper Allan McGregor and Hearts skipper Christophe Berra emerging - but it is Republic of Ireland winger Aiden McGeady who has had the most impact with his stunning displays.
Having risen through the youth ranks at Parkhead, the 22-year-old made his debut in 2004, scoring in a win against Hearts and has become one of the SPL's most coveted talents.
Slight, with bags of pace and skill, the diminutive forward has the qualities to turn games and was the deserved winner of a string of personal awards in Celtic's 2007-08 title winning campaign.
Having received praise from national team manager Giovanni Trappatoni, McGeady is reportedly attracting the interest of a number of English clubs including Boro's rivals Sunderland and Newcastle.
KAMEL GHILAS - VITORIA GUIMARAES
Ghilas is believed to have been tracked by Arsenal
Ghilas is a talented Algerian midfielder whose skills first surfaced with AS Cannes in France, and have flourished while playing for Guimaraes in the Portuguese leagues.
Marseille-born of Algerian parents, the 24-year-old has represented the country of his parents birth on six occasions, scoring twice.
His strike rate at domestic level is equally impressive, 21 goals have come in just 59 appearances, following his 22 in 85 with Cannes.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is believed to be tracking his progress, and a strong performance against English opposition could alert other Premier League clubs to his services.
STEVEN FLETCHER - HIBERNIAN
Fletcher reportedly attracted the interest of Real Madrid
It seemed like something from a children's comic book when Spanish champions Real Madrid were linked in the press with Scottish international striker Steven Fletcher.
Whether there was any truth in the rumour or not, what cannot be doubted is that the 21-year-old has made a big impact with the Edinburgh club since arriving on the scene in 2003.
His goals have been vital in helping Hibs into Europe and in their pursuit of silverware - his brace helped the club to the Scottish League Cup trophy with a 5-1 win against Kilmarnock.
Last season was marked with a first cap for the national side and the Scottish Football Writers' Young Player of the Year award.
SIMON HACKNEY - CARLISLE UNITED
Hackney joined Carlisle from Woodley Sports in February 2005
While former Blackburn striker Joe Garner and Danny Graham took much of the plaudits for scoring the goals in Carlisle's promotion effort last season, much of their tally came from the supply line of winger Simon Hackney.
Hackney's eight goals and countless assists showed his value to manager John Ward's side, and the wideman has become a regular fixture in the Carlisle first-team.
Quick and direct, the Manchester-born 24-year-old arrived from Woodley Sports in February 2005 and was a part of the side that won promotion to League One in 2006.
His impressive performances have not gone unnoticed, and reports suggest Leeds United have expressed an interest in securing his services for their own promotion push.
TOMMY WRIGHT - DARLINGTON
Wright scored 15 goals for the Quakers last season
Tommy Wright is striker in the old-fashioned centre-forward mould - tough, rugged and uncompromising.
The Leicester-born 23-year-old overcame the disappointment of being sold by his boyhood team to revitalise his career at Barnsley, and then Darlington, where he has added goals to his tireless support play.
Although his season was somewhat littered with niggles and injuries, Wright managed 15 goals in 2007-08 and proved a handy foil for a string of strike partners.
If he and the powerful Pawel Abbott can stay fit, League Two defences can expect another gruelling season at the hands of the Quakers' duo.
STEVEN HOGG - YORK CITY
Hogg began his career at Manchester United
York City signed Steven Hogg this summer following his release from the now defunct SPL side Gretna.
Formerly a Manchester United trainee, the 22-year-old is a left-footed playmaker who will be hoping to rebuild his career with the Minstermen.
With promotion on the agenda for York City this season, manager Colin Walker will be hoping Hogg's craft and guile will be a key factor in their push to return to the Football League.
