Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate wants to see more goals from across the side next season and help take the burden off his strikers.

Midfielder Stewart Downing did his bit with nine goals from his left-wing berth and Southgate has called on the rest of the squad to follow suit.

"We've got a lot of attacking options and really it's about making sure we're strong elsewhere," he told BBC Tees.

"The big question is can we get goals from other areas of the field."

Another player to have added important goals to the club's tally last season was David Wheater, a defender whose reputation has risen rapidly following a superb debut season in Boro colours.

As a former England centre-half himself, Southgate is keen to ensure the Redcar-born 20-year-old fulfils his rich potential.

"It's a good challenge for David and I don't think he should fear it," he said.

"He's seen what the league is about, he's proved he can play at this level and I think the thing about becoming a top player is producing it season in season out.

"I'm pleased in a selfish sense that he didn't get that England cap because it gives him something to strive for.

"He's got so much ahead of him if he carries on in the way he did last season."
